Sash Window

Sash windows are also the obvious choice of window for any traditionalist housebuilders and developers who are seeking to replicate a classic design.

This window features sashes (movable panels) that can be opened by lifting a frame vertically. This window suits older styled homes, but they are also a popular choice because they don’t take up any extra space when open.

Traditional box sash windows use pulleys, cords and weights to counter balance the top and bottom sashes. The weights are hidden in a ‘box’ in the frame on each side of the sash. Typically the windows would be fitted set back in a rebated reveal, allowing the window to be hidden by the external brickwork.

A contemporary option is to use spring balances rather than the weight and cord option. This option is more likely in new builds where a flush reveal can be achieved.

Traditional sashes are made up of small panes held together with glazing bars. The classic Georgian sash arrangement features a six over six-panel window, although eight over eight is achievable.

For restoration or renovation projects, particularly in period properties, listed buildings or conservation areas, a genuine timber sash is possibly the only suitable window option.

There is a common misconception that timber windows are high maintenance but quality wood is actually an extremely durable and stable material that offers outstanding insulating properties with minimal upkeep required. Wood can also be stained or painted to create the desired effect and a plastic replica will simply not be able to achieve the same results.

All of our timbers are FSC accredited and sourced from renewable sources, so whether you choose softwood or hardwood, our timber is the best available.

We can now offer a new wood product called Accoya, and as trained and qualified Accoya technicians, we can produce bespoke timber windows with a 50 year guarantee. Accoya is non-toxic and can withstand extreme external environments. It is also easy to treat in a range of finishes.

As our windows are bespoke, we can offer to supply and fit all types of glass including privacy, laminated and toughened.

A window is only completed when complemented by a thorough paint finish and made secure with locks, hinges and handles. Our windows are all offered in various colours and finishes.
